What motivated you to include a bequest in your estate plans for the NCSSM?

When I was accepted into the first class of NCSSM, I knew it was an incredible educational opportunity. What I didn't realize at the time was how much NCSSM would influence my personal development. NCSSM has shaped who I have become more than any other factor besides my family. My time at NCSSM not only fostered academic curiosity, but instilled confidence, and a sense of community that I've carried ever since.

Years later, my husband Dan and I experienced the positive impact of NCSSM again when our two sons were selected as students. Seeing them grow academically and discover their potential in a nurturing residential environment affirmed our belief in the school's mission even more.

Our family is incredibly fortunate to have had access to such an extraordinary public education. That's why I have stayed involved with the school over the years through the alumni association, the parents council and the foundation board, and Dan has been a mentor for the Aviation J-term giving students a chance to take the controls of a single engine plane.

How do you hope your bequest will impact future generations of NCSSM students?

Dan and I both come from families with a legacy in public education, and we believe it is important that students across our state have access to academic excellence and opportunity regardless of their background or where they live. We want to invest in developing the next generation of creative thinkers, leaders and change-makers for North Carolina because we know the benefits will be exponential.

NCSSM doesn't have the benefit of tuition compared to other institutions of higher learning, but its impact is outsized when compared to schools with larger student bodies and alumni bases. We want to ensure NCSSM is able to implement its strategies and objectives today and in the future, and it means a lot knowing our gift will have a meaningful impact.

What factors influenced your choice to give through a bequest rather than other forms of giving?

We have supported NCSSM for many years—through annual giving, capital campaigns, and volunteer service. Each of these contributions helps meet the school's needs in the present and supports its continued growth. But a bequest is a different way to support the school. It's our way of saying thank you for all NCSSM has done for our family and ensuring that the values we care about live on. We see it as an investment in the future of the school long after we're gone.

What advice would you give to other NCSSM alumni who might be considering a bequest?

Don't underestimate your journey. Think back to who you were when you arrived at NCSSM and how the school shaped your path. That kind of growth is rare and worth paying forward. Including NCSSM in your estate planning is a great way to show your support for the school without affecting your finances today. Talk to your financial advisor about the best way to make a bequest. Making bequests through IRAs and donor-advised funds can provide additional benefits and are great ways for family members to share in philanthropy decisions.
